Minister Of Women Affairs, Senator Amina Alhassan Resigns, Quits APC

Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Amina Alhassan on Saturday resigned her appointment under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In addition, the minister also resigned her membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party had on Thursday disqualified for running as governor of Taraba State, as result of her disloyalty to the ruling party.

It will be recalled that Senator Alhassan, had declared her readiness to support former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s bid for the Presidency against President Muhammadu Buhari if the former decides to contest in 2019.

Alhassan, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, said she respected Buhari, but stated that Atiku remained her godfather.

The minister had, in a leaked video on social media, endorsed the former vice-president for the 2019 presidential election.

However, the Minister in a letter dated 29 September, 2018 and addressed to President Buhari described her disqualification as grave injustice and hence there is no need for her to continue to be part of the APC.

She said,” I received with shock and dismay that I was disqualified and not cleared to contest for 2019 governorship election by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressive Congress (APC). No reason was given for my disqualification sir.”

“Mr President may wish to be also informed that I had always been a committed and a loyal party member and was at no time queried or admonished for any wrong doing or unconstitutional behaviour. Up to the time of writing this letter, no reason is given by the party for my disqualification to contest under APC.

“It is for this above reason sir, that I feel grave injustice was done to me by the party (APC), therefore my decision to leave the party and resign as a Minister. If am not qualified to contest election in APC, I feel I am not also qualified to remain in APC government as a Minister.”
