2023 general elections – Time for Nigerians To Make Haste

As the 2023 general elections fast approach, Nigerians are getting ready to cast their votes for their preferred candidates in both federal and State levels; Presidential, Governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly seats.

The election exercises, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission has been slated to hold on 25th February for President and National Assembly positions and 11th March, 2023 for Governorship and State House of Assembly Seats. Nigerians will be making their choices from the 18 political parties and candidates vying for political positions across the Country.

However, the fact still remains that there are leading political parties and candidates for all offices. For the Presidential post; Senator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso of the New Nigerians Peoples Party(NNPP) are the leading candidates.

Other candidates for Presidency include Mr. Omoyele Sowore of the African Alliance Congress (AAC), Barr,,. Peter Umeadi of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and Malik Ado Ibrahim of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), among others.

Nigerians will be witnessing their seventh elections since inception of Democracy and Civilian Administrations which started since 1999. Presidents that have ruled the country have done the best they could do since government is a continuum, but their best seems not to be good enough for Nigerians.

From Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to Alhaji Musa Yar’Ada of blessed memory, Dr.Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and now Major General Muhammadu Bihari (Rtd). The country has not been what majority of Nigerians desired at the level it is, economically and otherwise. A lot of damage has been done to the system by the ruling class.

According to Jairam Ramesh,an Indian Politician,”There never is a good time for tough decisions. There will always be an election or something else. You have to pick courage and do it.

Governance is about tough, even unpopular, decisions”. Nigerians can decide to take their destiny into their hands by taking the responsibility of choosing from among the presidential candidates, one who is competent, with both physical and mental capacity devoid of religion and ethnicity and above all, good track record to start turning around the country for the good of all Nigerians.

Also, with the introduction of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), there is no room for rigging and other electoral fraud if carefully monitored by those concerned.

The President, Muhammadu Buhari has severally reinstated his stand assures Nigerians of a credible election. This further gives Nigerians the confidence to exercise their civic responsibility and elect competent people into the various position of power in the forth-coming general election
