Oil Theft: Stop Accusing The Military, Monarch Tells Asari Dokubo

Stop accusing the military over oil theft in the Niger Delta, a monarch has told former militant leader, Asari Dokubo.

The Olowu of Kuta in Osun, Oba Adekunle-Makama Tegbosun III, who gave the caution, said such a statement credited to Dokubo was capable of demoralising the military who had been fighting to end oil theft in the region.

, “The outburst of Dokubo that the military was responsible for oil theft in the Niger Delta region after his visit to Mr President was unbecoming.

“It is a betrayal of trust. Why should he use the presidential press galery to make such statement that is capable of demoralising our military.

“Also, if he has any information about some unscrupulous elements in the military involved in oil theft, he can pass it unto Mr President without that undue sensationalism,” Tegbosun said.

The monarch spoke in a statement issued to newsmen in Osogbo today, asserting that it was unacceptable for anyone to ridicule the Nigerian military.

Describing the one credited to Asari Dokubo as unbecoming, he said it amounted to a deliberate attempt to break the spirit of the Nigerian Military and that that was not acceptable, given the commitment of the men to safety of life and property in the region.

Instead, Dokubo as well as other Nigerians had a duty to support the military in the fight against oil theft as a way of making them to succeed, rather than statements capable of dampening their spirits.

’Dokubo had, yesterday fingered personnel of the Nigerian Army and Navy for oil theft in the Niger Delta, saying they had been intimidating the Civil Defence personel on ground to forestall such thefts.

He made the allegation while speaking with State House Correspondents after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“The Army and Navy are behind oil theft. They intimidate civil defence, who are by law expected to protect installations. They tap directly from the oil head. What has been happening in the last eight years is unprecedented anywhere in the world,” he said.
