Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is optimistic that, in contrast to the previous tournament, the squad will perform well in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria has consistently failed to make an impression in continental competitions, despite possessing a strong team in terms of talent.

The team will have another chance to make their fans happy when they join the other 23 teams to battle for the prestigious crown.

The West African nation has managed to win the Afcon three times, with the latest success coming in 2013. They have finished second four times and won the bronze on eight occasions.

In the most recent competition – held in Cameroon – the Super Eagles were felled in the Round of 16 which was not expected.

Iwobi has assured the supporters that things will be different this time.

“The fans know the quality we have in the team, from each man that is in the squad and the ones that didn’t make the squad,” Iwobi told the Super Eagles media team.

“There is a lot of talent in the squad. We have confidence we can go far in this competition, but we have to prove it and assure the fans that we can prove ourselves. They can be sure we will make the nation proud.

“Preparation has been good, we are in Abu Dhabi right now. We have got some [friendly matches] to warm up before the Afcon. Everyone is almost complete here, the squad is almost complete and we are also training well.”

The Fulham midfielder will have to be at his best, alongside other stars, to stand a chance of helping the team to get a positive outcome in Ivory Coast.

Nigeria’s opening match against the National Thunder is scheduled for Sunday, 14th. They are grouped in Group A alongside Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the host Ivory Coast.
