Veteran Comic Actor Baba Suwe Buried In Lagos Today

Veteran comic actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, has been buried today in Lagos.

His burial happened four days after his death, following a protracted illness.

Since the news of his death broke, a lot of hearts have been broken, especially against the background of his recent travails.

This peaked on October 12, 2011 incident, when Baba Suwe was held at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on suspicion of drug trafficking.

He was suspected to have invested several wraps of cocaine and was kept under surveillance by the agency for three weeks.

A Lagos court ordered his release and instructed the

to pay him N25 million as compensation.

In 2013, the Appeal Court struck out the compensation ruling, insisting that the anti-narcotic agency violated no law in keeping Baba Suwe in custody all through the investigation period.

That was to mark a big dent on an otherwise illustrious comic life.

The news of his death drew reactions from prominent Nigerians including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The former for example said “Baba Suwe’s death had left a vacuum that would take some time to be filled in the entertainment industry”, while Gbajabiamila described him as very talented, urging the ones he left to be consoled by the fact that Baba Suwe used his lifetime to make others happy.

Among the popular productions he starred in are Iru Esin, a 1997 production by Olaiya Igwe; Ojabo Kofo, Arewa Okunrin, Teni Teni, Owo laso oge, Obáj’obalo, and Àkóbí gómìnà.

Born on 22 August 1958, in Inabere Street in Lagos Island where he grew up, Baba Suwehailed from Ikorodu local government area of Lagos State.

After his primary education at Jamaitul Islamial Primary School in Lagos and Children Boarding School, Osogbo, Baba Suwe later attended the Adekanbi Commercial High School in Mile 12, Lagos state and the Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo, Osun state where he obtained the West African School Certificate

His acting career began in 1971 but he came into limelight after he featured in a movie titled, Omolasan, a film produced by Obalende.
