How The Curtains Closed On The NIJ Students’ Week

The 2019 students week of the Nigerian institute of Journalism, Ogba, Lagos came to a euphoric conclusion on 11 May 2019 with a memorable dinner and awards night ceremony.

The students week which is a yearly tradition put together to help foster togetherness and pride amongst the students commenced on 6 May 2019 with the theme “XLR8: PUSHING BEYOND BOUNDARIES”.

That opening day witnessed an opening ceremony and a concert, followed by a cultural day and an educative session with different professionals in various fields of journalism in the days following. That last item provided opportunity to discuss the challenges of life after school with the students.

On the fourth was for a showcase of costume and carnival, while the fifth day featured pageantry, the highpoint of which was the emergence of Testimony Obadan-Peter as Mr NIJ, while Miss Adenike Amosun became Miss NIJ.

The sixth and final day was the dinner and awards night which held in the school grounds, the event which was a formal black tie event was graced majorly by students, lecturers such as Mr Tene John, and Mr Akin Ojo and members of school management including the Students Affairs officer, Mrs Patricial Kalesanwo.

The dinner commenced at 6pm upon the arrival of students. The men were dressed in tuxedoes, suits or blazers while the ladies were clad in stunning dinner gowns. The red carpet was rolled out for students to strut and showoff their outfits while numerous paparazzi take their pictures, students also took pictures on their personal devices to upload on social media with the hashtag”#XLR8″.

The festivities began in earnest with a comedic presentation by Baba Landlord and Aina followed by musical performances by Kenny Blaq, Wilson and other students, and these kept the crowd shouting and hailing and shrieking and dancing.

The highly anticipated awards ceremony began at 8pm with the first award for the Most Friendly Female Student, going to Blessing Mark, while the Most Friendly Male award was won by Toriola Olajide.

Other winners on the night include Adebayo Damilare aka Blackboy- Most Sociable Full Time Student, Wilson Godwin- Most Sociable Part-Time Student.

Other notable award recipients were  Owoyemi Taiwo- Sportsman Of The Year, Adaku Onyelu- Sportswoman Of The Year and Otunba Tunji Abass- Humanitarian Of The Year.

In her reaction, the Students Affairs Officer for NIJ, Mrs Patricia Kalesanwo said the week was of value to students adding that,  “It helps to reduce pressure on the students, in order to help them concentrate better in classes and exams”.

In his reaction, Wilson Godwin said “I feel really good and proud” while the chairman of the Students Week Committee Adebayo Damilare aka Blackboy said “I’m grateful for all we achieved during the week. It was tough and stressful but I thank God for all the positive feedback we have received”.
