The successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State is sparking mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter).
While some people are expressing relief in the eventual return of the captives, others are using the opportunity to challenge the government to live up to its responsibilities.
Following the announcement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga that the victims had been rescued through a coordinated security operation, several users welcomed the development and commended the security agencies.
For example, while reacting to the post, @Dave_TKH wrote: “I’m happy for them. After spending months in captivity, I sincerely hope they’re able to heal and reclaim their lives.
“The unfortunate reality is that experiences like kidnapping by bandits often leave psychological scars that can last a lifetime.”
@LionelKuti wrote: “We will still hear from the teachers or the students what happened exactly… Name the terrorists and their sponsors, name the location the clash of rescue happened and let Nigerians verify.”
Similarly, @BasorunOfDesign commented: “Make dem give full account abeg. We need to know what really happened.”

Another user, @JosephTheDreamer, expressed skepticism, writing: “Lies, show us the bandits that you arrested.”
Despite the doubts expressed by some users, many others welcomed the victims’ safe return and offered prayers and words of encouragement, expressing hope that the rescued children and teachers would receive the care and support needed to recover from their ordeal.
The mixed reactions are expected, given both the reoccurrence of kidnaps in different parts of the country particularly and what is considered government laxity when it comes to people welfare.
