Why did Jesus Christ, the son of God weep over Jerusalem?

This question reverberated recently in the course of a ministration by Bishop Mike Okonkwo, presiding bishop of the Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) at TREM headquarters, Anthony Oke Lagos.

The son of God, Jesus Christ wept over Jerusalem, a city with profound spiritual and historical importance to humanity, so what was the reason?

The scripture at Luke19: 41 provides a background, saying:

“And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

“For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children…”

READ ALSO: According to Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Jesus Christ wept over Jerusalem, not for reason of helplessness, over what had befallen the Holy City of God and its inhabitants.

Instead, he wept because the people in the city at that time, reckoned not with their time of visitation.

The preacher was using the story to admonish the importance of steadfastness, commitment and consistency in the Christian race.

Rather than giving in to delusion or lackadaisical attitude, the said believers should develop staying power, give all it takes in whatever position or assignment they are saddled with.

Okonkwo told the congregation never to lose focus, they should instead to be consistent with the things they have established to be true and important.

“In ministry when they say forward march, you don’t stop, you don’t turn even if you reach a wall”..he admonished,

He said this resoluteness characterised the life of early Christian missionaries and accounted for the huge success they achieved.

It was to the extent that some of them who undertook to evangelise remote regions and had to cross the waters,  “as soon as they crossed the sea, they burnt the boat with which they crossed. It was like, ‘either we make it or we perish.

“You can’t make progress in life by going forward and looking back”, the evangelist said, adding that indecision was one of the things affecting believers.
