I Stood There Freezing Not Knowing What To Do

I moved to Canada from a poor country in the Northern East part of Africa. Everything was new to me which was overwhelming for me on both sides positive and negative. And by everything I mean every single thing. What locals would consider normal and wouldn’t take brain cell to do I

The social norms here took me a while to decode, and I am still yet to learn more, but that was my biggest challenge because with no family or friends in my town I needed to make a new social circle. And I found that making new friends as an adult is just really really hard, and on top of that my ignorance to the social norms was doing me the opposite of help along with the language barrier.

My perception is now changing because I am adapting. I am more aware of my current environment, more familiar to the language, local sayings, phrases and slang.

I feel safe everywhere I go in this country, even those places I was advised to stay away from. Canadians are one of the friendliest people I have ever seen, and the friendship bond is a sacred one. It might be really hard to penetrate a social circle as an adult, but it is not impossible.

I would like to share my little experience about Australia when i moved here in 2008. It was really difficult in the beginning because of homesickness. Even though i came here with my wife and 2 year old son.

I used to get very emotional because I missed my parents and brother sister. It took me a while to get used to and understand the Aussie culture and way of life. I also asked my mother to give me a visit after few months and she visited me for 3 months and that really gave me the strength to keep going.

I got my permanent residency after 2–1/2 years of moving here. It all changed after getting the PR as I didn’t have problem working full-time, my wife got the job, my son started going to school and we all started to enjoy more and travel more as we started earning more dollars.

Majority of the people who cry about not getting PR are the ones who struggle to score good in IELTS, not going to regional area to score extra points and choosing the degree which is good in their home country, but not in the skilled occupation list of Australia. In Australia, here how people fail to score enough points. IELTS; 6 bands = 0 points 7 bands= 10 points. 8 bands = 20 points if you think you can’t score good in IELTS then don’t come. You get 5 extra points for studying in regional areas which people don’t realise before coming here and then cry later when they fall short of 5–10 points.

The Younger You Are, The Easier Here

I landed in Montreal 45 years ago no French and a bit of English. It was the hardest thing I could ever done in my entire life. However, it was the wisest thing I could ever done. The younger you are the easier it gets. Canada is the country of opportunities and the friendliest place on earth. It was voted, I think last year I can’t remember, the second best place to live on earth! My suggestion, get involve in your community volunteer, make friends, especially people from your own country. Soon, you will have friends from all over the world. Because this is what Canada is all about, people like you, from all over the world makes this place the best place to live. Reach out to all of us, your Canadian/Mexican friend.

This is a common feeling for anyone who is brand new to Canada. The struggle is part of the process. I had a friend who thought that things would be easier because he used to work at a cruise ship for several years. He wanted to go back to his old life, but he persisted and now he is a PR. Sure that being adaptable is important to survive in a new country, but once you are able to navigate your way towards your goal, you would be able to say that Canada is your home.

As a Canadian who grew up here, but also has travelled all over including the Middle East, Europe, Mexico and Central America, I’ll say I honestly think Canadians are some of the most accepting, friendly ppl on the planet. I can only try to imagine what it must be like to leave your home, friends and everything you know to come to Canada and start over. It must be soooo hard. But I honestly think Canada is one of the first post-cultural countries on earth. We want to accept, integrate and benifit from any people who want to come here, work hard, and become their own version of a Canadian. I can only speak from my experience but in places like Egypt, Lebanon, or Turkey, (I pick these bc I’ve been there),I couldn’t imagine a Canadian trying to move there and blend in, start a family or build a life. I think it would be almost impossible.

We all feel the same way when we move to Canada. Canada can be extremely depressing for some people. Just tell yourself that you will try it out for two years before making a decision to move back. This will make it bearable.  Please, pleeeeese get a Canadian education in these two years or you will regret forever.

What to study to make the best use of your time and money is a very important question that is hard to answer. Be careful and do your research; talk to people doing the jobs you want. I am Canadian and lived here most of my life. It is a wonderful country. I would say that I hear from many immigrants that it is difficult to find well paid work and to have credentials from other countries recognised. Dentist, doctors, (and I think engineers) end up having to repeat schooling here which is ridiculous and a tragedy. Many companies are having a hard time hiring people so there are jobs once you have a work permit, but it can be a while until you get the job you want. So to balance some of what is said above it takes time to make friends and also to find a way to afford to live here.
