Meranda Resigns As Lagos Assembly Speaker, Obasa Returns

An interesting scenario has played out at the Lagos State House of Assembly today as incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Meranda resigns from office

The office thus reverted to the man that had held it until January 13, Mudashiru Obasa.

The Eagle had reported earlier a tense atmosphere at the assembly complex whereby security men cordoned off the place, preventing even journalists from gaining access.

It became clear that something of big socio-political impact in the state was about to unfold.

The apex of the whole drama today was when Meranda, the first female to occupy the office of Speaker at the house, read out her resignation during plenary, ending both her tenure and those of her colleagues appointed alongside her.

Her resignation was not a total surprise to insiders at Alausa and political observers outside, given the entrenched position of the man she took over from.

He is believed to have solidified his position in Lagos politics over the years that necissiated his use of “strong arm tactics”, including “obvious show of arrogance” as some close watchers of Alausa have described it before now.

This is believed to have precipitated his short removal.

Part proof was the stir he caused around the state, on February 27, 2025, when he stormed the House of Assembly Complex, escorted by armed, uniformed security operatives.

Many had said Obasa would not have dared that had he not had tacit support of the powers that be in the state.

In fact, he had insisted and acted out his strong belief by stating that he had not been removed from office, a citing of irregularities in the process notwithstanding.

Obasa insisted he remained the Speaker, rejecting his removal.

The Eagle had also reported earlier today, the ruling party convoking a meeting the key players, which included high ranking party officials.

Meranda resigned after a meeting with these high-ranking All Progressives Congress member-delegates believed to have dispatched from above.

Mudashiru Obasa was removed as speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, on January 13, 2025, by two-thirds of the 40-member house who alleged misconduct.

Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, took over the position, amidst euphoria and optimism in some quarters and pessimism in others.
