The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has alerted the public of alleged plan by the state government to arm thugs for the upcoming governorship elections in the state.

It has said that the state government had set aside N2 billion for the purpose of procuring arms concerning the said elections, and had already recruited thugs for the assignment.

It thus called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi, to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegation, which it said emanated from intelligence reports.

In a statement signed by the Head, Media and Publicity Committee Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, Oluremi Omowaiye, the party said Governor Ademola Adeleke, his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye, and the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Mr Adekunle Omoyele have cases to answer concerning the weighty allegation.

Referencing what it called intelligence information available to it, the council said N500 million has allegedly been released as part of the funds earmarked for the proposed procurement, using Amotekun as a disguise.

The Eagle reports that the APC had complained copiously in the past of how the PDP/Accord party thugs were secretly recruited into the Amotekun by the controversial retired police officer and former Chief Security Officer to Governor Adeleke, Mr Adekunle Omoyele .

It said the same Omoyele, alongside many of the operatives of the Amotekun corps, were currently facing murder and terrorism charges in a federal high court Abuja for invading and killing innocent citizens at Akinlalu, a community in Ife North Local Government Area of the state last October.

“Our concern is heightened by the recent unpalatable experience of APC where no fewer than 30 members of our party were gruesomely murdered by thugs linked to Governor Adeleke and his party, PDP/Accord, en route to the 2022 governorship and 2023 presidential/national assembly elections”, the party stated in its stament.

“Our concern is further heightened by the accusation that suspected criminals on the Wanted-list of the Police, like Lekan Emir Ajagungbade and Nurudeen Alowonle, are being sheltered in the Government House, Okefia, by officials of the state government.

“The Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council is deeply worried that any attempt to acquire arms and ammunition for criminals and political thugs is capable of compromising the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State.

“Democracy is sustained through persuasion, performance and popular support—not through intimidation, fear or the deployment of force”, it added.

It said Governor Ademola Adeleke should seek re-election on the basis of his record in office and the confidence of the electorate, not through backdoor or violence.
