“There is not enough gas for cooking” – NGA President

Managing Director and President, Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) E. D. Ubong, has stated that there is minimal production of gas for cooking, thereby causing the increase in gas prices across the country.

Speaking as a panelist at the ongoing Nigeria Oil and Gas, NOG, Local Content Conference 2022, in Abuja, Ubong said “Every sector you look at, export is the same story, that is the reality of where we are today.

“There is not enough gas for cooking, so the cooking gas price has gone up, there is not enough gas to fire the plants, so there is virtually no electricity.”

According to him, Nigerians are used to fuel scarcity, but in dealing with gas scarcity, all hands must be on deck. There is a concentrated effort to be made in the gas decade to figure out how to unlock it for both the domestic and export markets, he explained.

Moreso, he stated that Nigeria needs to manufacture the cylinders; “we need gas to move in line with local demand and unlink it from export so people can afford it.”

Also, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Managing Director/CEO of Nigeria LNG Limited, warned against pipeline vandalism, oil theft, illegal refining, and illegal bunkering as Nigeria’s energy crisis worsens.

He said, “We have people who are participating in this activity, masquerading as though this is a community problem, and pretending to be immature modular refineries. That is not the case, this is criminality and it needs to be dealt with as such.”
