Teacher Forgiven Rape Offence Because He Prostrated Before Elders

How can merely prostrating before elders absolve a man of over 50, a rape offence against a minor?

Anyone who had closely observed that particular compound on Awoseyin Street, Shomolu, would have known that it was a matter of time, before Teacher, the pet name for this lay fellow of a bulky frame who never seemed to have a regular job, would commit some infamy.

He was just always with the kids, because he did not really have an engaging occupation.

Come to think of it, many had wondered the choice of Teacher as pet name for a man who couldn’t speak a word of English, who obviously had not smelt the four walls of a school, but had even eloped, tales have it, from mason apprenticeship.

What he opted to doing instead, was following one apala musician, “Director” about the neigbourhood, endlessly rehearsing on the maracas for a big show that never materialised.

Because he was always around, many of the women in the compound, were okay with their petty trades displayed at a strictly allocated corners of the compound under his care, so they could attend to house chores. That indirectly meant leaving with him most of the time, their children who were not yet enrolled in school.

And that was how Aisha, the 8 year old daughter of Alhaja Fatai, began finding comfort in Teacher.

One or two tenants had occasionally doubted Teacher’s sincerity, usually admitting the baby girls in-between his laps as he supposedly sang lyrical lines for them. If they had any suspicions a part of his body must be stroking those babies bodies, there was no way to find out because he always had this unusually overflowing agbada thrown over himself.

But on this particular day, it was not just a lyrical line that Teacher sang after Moriah dozed off on his laps, but a rape offence.

What came about was that he had supposedly carried her to her daddy’s room to lay her properly so she could sleep.

All of a sudden, the neigbohours could hear some infant voice sobbing. Alhaja Fatai was not around;  it was his neigbour next room that had the worrisome sob and rushed out alerting others in the compound, That was how Teacher’s secret blew.

The entire compound was in tumult, and next the street had heard. People were running towards the compound to see for themselves, and almost immediately some young men who had all along detested Teacher’s obviously lousy and lazy dispositions, wanted to teach him a lesson.

They were already pulling at his agbada, smacking and kicking as they dragged him along. Incidentally, as it appeared, his cup wasn’t yet totally full.

Just by the foreyards, something wondrous happened, for immediately upon sighting the elders that the young men had wanted to lay a complaint before making away with him, hideously smart Teacher did something that somewhat switched the course of justice in his favour: that thins was simply prostrating before elders.

It wasn’t clear what he spoke, but rather than the kicks and slaps that the angry youths had expected, the elders called for calm.

It was no longer a question of whether or not he committed the offence for which he was being taken away, but the reckoning that the elders had with what he did: it straightway won him unqualified forgiveness.

And that was how Teacher got off a rape offence simply prostrating before elders right before everyone’s eyes on this particular day.
