The world woke up last week to learn of the gruesome murder of Super TV CEO, Michael Usifo Ataga.
What was even more shocking was when days later, a 21 year old student of the University of Lagos Chidinma Ojukwu was arrested as the murder suspect, a crime to which she confessed to carrying out.
I don’t know if it was the gender, age or beauty of the suspect that caught everyone by surprise or her confession to having actually committed the crime.
The takeaway from this whole saga is the moral decadence which our society is faced with, teenage smoking being one.
A man old enough to be her father was comfortably having an illicit relationship with her and not only that but also indulging in alcohol and drugs with her. It’s appalling.
This is an eye opener to parents to be careful and more alert to what their children do, their friends or who they hang out with, their lifestyle etc.
According to Chidinma, she started smoking in school, she probably never held a cigarette prior to her admission but a new phase of her life that should broaden her horizon and brighten her future, led her down the wrong path.
She learnt the wrong things and got involved with people who should have steered her to the right way but instead, plunged her deeper.
Whatever her fate is, the lesson to be learnt is parents and the elderly ones in the society have a great job to do.
Monitor your children even when they don’t live with you anymore, have a bond with them where they can comfortably tell you anything and let’s not forget the saying that it takes a village to train a child so everyone should look out for these young ones around them, helping out whenever they can and correcting them accordingly.

Our children are indeed the future of tomorrow so all hands need to be on deck to make this a reality.
