The Independent Day anniversary of October 1 2024, is an opportunity for states, individuals and organisations to party in grand style

It will not be so for the Borno State government.

Instead, the government has announced its decision to scale down celebration and instead, seek the face of God.

Apparently, the state is still sober following the recent flood disaster that ravaged her neigbourhoods..

The Maiduguri Metropolis, its capital and other surrounding Local Government Areas (LGAs) were affected by the flooding.

The decision to scale down celebration for October 1 2024, was announced yesterday by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar.

He said it was a challenging time for the state and that there was need for collective reflection and solidarity.

He said Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had once again expressed deep sympathy for victims while urging his people to unite and pray for the state, and the nation also,

“While we celebrate our nation’s independence day, we must, however, focus on supporting and standing in solidarity with those affected by the September 10 flood disaster”, he stated in the statement, adding:

“Let us take this time to pray for recovery and strength, not only for Borno State but for all of Nigeria.

“Government will redirect resources and efforts towards rehabilitation of infrastructures that were destroyed by the flood and provide relief to our people, ensuring that affected families receive the necessary aid and support,”

In the area of aid, he said his administration was on top of arrangements to ensure effective disbursement of relief materials
