No Reprieve Yet For Gov Akerodolu, Another Ultimatum On His Neck

It is not easy to hold a public office, which explains in part why another ultimatum hangs on the neck of Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

There is no reprieve yet for the governor despite fighting the health battle of his life.

For the umpteenth time, there is an ultimatum on his desk, to resign within 72 hours as a way of ensuring effective administration of the state.

This time, it is the conglomerate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) support groups that is making the demand.

The ultimatum they have handed over is within 72 hours.

This they say is important for effective management of Ondo State, as provided for in the constitution.

Addressing a press conference today on Friday at party National Secretariat, Abuja it said this demand did not mean the group was praying for the governor’s recovery.

National Coordinator of the PDP Forever Initiative, Obande Gideon, said, compassion aside that business should not be mixed with sentiment.

Afterall, the constitution, in envisaging situations like this, had made provision via the availability of a deputy.

“When former President Umar Musa Yar’Adua was sick and could not transmit power to the vice president before leaving the country, our party invoked the powers of the constitution and empowered the vice president as the acting president”, Obande said.

“It also happened in Taraba State when the late Gov. Danbaba Suntai had an air crash, we resolved the crisis”, he added.

He lampooned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the situation whereby the governor is not available and the deputy could not step in, saying with this, the ruling party had failed in providing good leadership for which it was voted into office.

The PDP he argued had done better, in that where it was in control of the reins of power, it had not felt need for power to be transmitted to the deputies for seamless governance.

According to him, “The question is, since the deputy governor is not allowed to act, and the governor has refused to resume, who is administering the State at the moment.

“We hereby call on Governor Olawarotimi Akeredolu to resume within 72hours or hand over power to his Deputy for effective management of Ondo State.

“We make bold to say that, if the Governor fail to resume or hand over power to his deputy within 72 hours, we will have no option than to occupy Ondo State Government House to press home our demand,” he said

Whether an ultimatum or understanding that this prevailing matter would require is to be proven with time.
