FIGC Wow To Kick Clubs Out Of Serie A If They Join Super League

The Italian Football Federation has vowed to kick teams out of Serie A if they try to join a breakaway European Super League.

The likelihood of the competition returning has increased since the European Super League won its legal battle against FIFA and UEFA earlier this month. The European Court of Justice ruled that it was illegal for the FIGC to prohibit the breakaway proposal, but Fabrizio Romano claims that this implies no Italian teams would enter a new ESL as a result of the FIGC’s action. They will be kicked out of Serie A starting in 2024–2025 if they do.

Twelve teams, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham, signed up for the breakaway tournament in April 2021, sparking the start of the ESL saga. However, the plans fell through in a matter of days due to significant anger from governments, rival European leagues, and fans alike.

As clubs all around the world struggle financially, it might only be a matter of time until a new European Super League is proposed. Up to 80 European teams were reportedly participated in a multi-divisional structure in a later iteration of the ESL, which had merit-based qualifying and no permanent members.
