Do You Know That Children Are Entitled To Rights?

Do you know that children are entitled to rights? Despite all the cravings for them and adoration by individuals and families, are the rights of children understood and allowed them?

These questions would not have been necessary if truly, if individuals, families and groups consciously ensure that those things which protect the welfare and longevity of children are as a matter of necessity advanced them. Experience of everyday happenings, and accounts in the news do suggest otherwise.

The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) just like other global organisations have been campaigning for the protection of the rights of children.

From the body language, children’s interest and needs are only to be defined by their parents, foster or biological. Some carry on as if sending children to school for example, or ensuring their health wellbeing are privileges, rather than their rights.

To such parents, the question remains germane: do you know that children are entitled to rights? The non admittance has led to the abuse of children in society, right from their homes. That is why, in the course of last Children’s Day celebration, which is observed globally every May 27, the question kept reverberating: do you know that children are entitled to rights? Protection from Harm

Children are entitled to rights and one of them is protection from harm. Unfortunately, many children are endangered. They are left unprotected or sent on errands that they lack the capacity to undertake. Children should be free from harmful work. They should also be protected from drugs, sexual abuse, human trafficking, corporal punishment, emotional and psychological abuse, harmful detention, war, and any other forms of exploitation.

Education

As important as education is to the human mind and advancement of society, the people who hold the key to such a future of any society are not guaranteed this desirability. It is expected that every child should access education beginning from Primary education to Secondary education and in fact to the highest level, this is not the case. The sight of children hawking when they are supposed to be in school learning is common in our country.

Education prepares a child to become a responsible member of society.  It helps in the development of their personalities, talents, skills, rights, and abilities and even moral behaviours.

The denial of this right has accounted in part, to why we have delinquent children and all manner of crime in our society.

Good Health

Every child has the right to be alive. Young people deserve the best possible health care, nutritious food as they are easily susceptible to diseases and infections.

Moreso, children deserve proper clothing, clean water, electricity, and safe housing. Children should learn good health and hygiene habits in their schools and homes.

Children should have their mental, psychological, emotional, and physical health checked regularly, especially if they are away from home. The governments should assist also as they have a responsibility to help families who cannot afford health expenses.

Family

Every child has the right to live and bond with a family. This is very important, not only for the child but for the progressive development of the country, when children are made to bond in families, they imbibe important values that help the society in maintaining its peace and cohesion. When children do not have a sense of belonging to any family, it is difficult to get them to have a sense of belonging to the large society.

Children are entitled to rights and there are many more.  The list include right to identify, right to freedom of thought, privacy and more.
