BAD ROADS AND MISMANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA
    By: Uthman Oriyomi Abdullahi

For me,bad road is one that has very slick, deep, mud or huge gullies or huge rocks to avoid. In Nigeria today, bad roads is seen as a major problem affecting road users.Going around the 36 States that made up Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory are facing the problem of bad roads.
Pooly maintained roadways cause accident in a variety of ways, mostly due to the fact that they create an enormous hazards to drivers and other road users. In many instances,a few drivers attempt to avoid a certain situation like potholes or pooling water which could cause a serious accident.
Some Roads hazards include clear zone issues, confusing signage, inadequate signage, sudden drivers maneuvers.
This bad Roads condition which exist through out every states in Nigeria include
*Potholes:severe accident can occur when blacktop or asphalt are missing in large chunks from the road.Asphalt must be proper spread on roads during construction,it should be use in filling and levelling the ground in order to avoid damages and potholes.
*Ice patches: this can even form without rain or snow. They typically form in isolated areas on the road.Gutter must be dug beside every roads to avoid this ice patches staying long on the roads.
*Oil and chip:These are temporary fixed on roads before they are resurfaced.Oil and chip areas can become slippery when left for extended period of time.It is the duty of Road Management Agencies to make sure oil and chip are fixed on time inorder to avoid slippery which can deraile many vehicles or train on railway.
*Construction work Zones: Lanes shift and uneven roads are some of the issue involved in construction areas.
Majority of Roads in Nigeria are managed by each State road Management Agency. The agency needs almost roads at’fair” condition levels.”Funding Shortfalls and deffered maintenance will lead roads to deteriorate rapidly . Poor road conditions can lead to more than a bumpy ride.Damage roads become dangerous. This includes potholes, unever road surface, broken concrete, exposed rebar, sink holes and road cracks. If a driver hits a large pothole,it could burst the tire causing the vehicle to veer into another lane, colliding with another vehicle, uneven roads surfaces can cause a drivers to loose control of their vehicles, leading to a crash or rollover accident injuring the driver, passengers and Pedestrians.
Bad road condition cause accident which can lead to lost of lives of passengers or severe injury. It is the duty of the Federal Government to keep consulting with the road Management Agencies attached to Federal Roads at least twice in a month for them to keep monitoring the roads, the same applies to State and local Government to carry out that function in their jurisdiction.
Despite the fact that bad Roads leads to accident,it also serve as an hideout for snakes, roddents and many other reptiles.Arm robbers usually the area where the roads has got damaged as a junction where they attack vehicles on highways. It also damage vehicles parts in the process of making use of the roads as a means of transportation.
I will use this opportunity to advice the three tiers of Government to take this into cognizance because life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodation.
