As Christian leaders in Nigeria, it’s time to reflect on our roles in speaking truth to power. Just as God called Jeremiah to confront bad kings (Jeremiah 1:17-19), we must not shy away from addressing the hardships faced by our people.

Jesus taught us that ‘the kingdom of God suffers violence, and the violent takes it by force ‘ (Matthew 11:12). Let us not deceive ourselves into thinking we are truly worshipping God while turning a blind eye to injustice.

Both Christians and non-Christians, we urge you to speak out, against the suffering of our people; the corruption and greed that plague our nation, the lack of accountability and transparency in governance, and the oppression of the poor and vulnerable.

To our Government leaders, we say: use your positions to serve the people, not just your interests;  Provide for the welfare and security of all citizens, end the corruption and impunity that have held our nation back.

To the pastors, we say: do not compromise your faith for personal gain or political expediency; speak truth to power, even if it’s uncomfortable; use your platforms to promote justice, equality, and compassion.

To Christian leaders and all those in positions of power, we say: remember that you are servants of the people, not masters; use your power to uplift and empower, not to oppress and exploit. Fear God, not just the people who elected or appointed you.

May we be bold in our faith and unwavering in our commitment to Justice; may we be the voice for the voiceless and the advocates for the marginalised.

Let us come together to build a Nigeria where Justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream ( Amos 5:24 ).
