Tonali Gets Warm Reception From Newcastle Fans As 10-Month Ban Looms

Newcastle United supporters were gracious to Sandro Tonali despite the Italian midfielder’s impending 10-month suspension.

Newcastle announced earlier this month that the Italian Football Federation and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office were looking into the 23-year-old for possible unlawful betting activity. He acknowledged to having wagered on AC Milan, his old team, and is now reportedly going to serve a 10-month ban as a result. Tonali came off the bench in his team’s 1-0 loss to Dortmund on Wednesday, and the Magpies’ supporters at St. James’ Park gave him a warm ovation ahead of any potential penalty.

The Italian international signed a £55 million ($66.6 million) contract to join the northeast team back in July, and he has impressed at Newcastle so far. However, Eddie Howe’s team, who hopes to advance in the Champions League and climb the Premier League standings, is severely hurt by his imminent punishment. Newcastle would probably aim to sign another midfield player in the January transfer window if he is indeed banned. Nicolo Fagioli of Juventus, incidentally, has already served a seven-month ban after being connected to the continuing betting scam.

Newcastle’s next match is on Saturday against Wolves; Tonali and the team will find out shortly what will happen to the midfield player. On November 7, they head to Dortmund, Germany, for their next Champions League match.
