Democracy Day: Ambassador Ajadi Extols Icons Of June 12, Raps Govt

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day today, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has taken time out to extoll all pro-June 12 agitators whose actions and activities led to the inauguration of the day.

He said their dogged sacrifice and principled agitation, would never be forgotten in a hurry; but remain a rallying point for equity and good governance in the country.

Ambassador Ajadi who flew the gubernatorial flag of the Nigeria People’s Party in Ogun State in the last general election, also advised Nigerians on the best way to commemorate Democracy day.

According to him, this would by proffering constructive criticisms and suggestions for good governance and the development in the country.

“Democracy Day 2025 for me, is another reminder to government, of the need to truly make life better for the average Nigerian.

“It should mean those in government remembering that they owe it as a duty to offer best service to those who put them there; and not to live in affluence while the generality of the people suffer”, Ambassador Ajadi stated.

“Today’s commemoration, should be a rallying point for people-oriented policies and the spread of the much talked about dividends of democracy.

“It is a thing of concern and worry that in a country blessed with abundant resources, its citizens are living in want and sheer lack of the dividends of democracy; that is irony.

“It is because of these that I advise the Nigerian government to respect the will and desire of the Nigerian people, by making the Democracy Day commemorations count”.

Reiterating his advice on the Nigerian electorate not to lose hope, Ambassador Ajadi said they should spend Democracy Day, reflecting and suggesting viable options to governance in the country, and generally making the government sit up.

“What does democracy mean: government of the people by the people and for the people.. If this is the case, then let the people should keep demanding what is right.

“Those in government must remember that God allowed them there by privilege, to do good, and not oppress the people they are supposed to lift.

“Let there be evidences of government in every constituency that is represented in government.  After all, there is money voted for these constituencies every year ; but how many of them have constituency projects to show for all the monies”, he asked rhetorically.

The entrepreneur cum politician, made reference to increased social ills in the country like hunger, unemployment, kidnapping and frustration, submitting that bad governance is a contributory factor.

“We all know the adage that an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

“You cannot have an army of idle youths from state to state and expect that there would not be burglary, kidnapping, prostitution and other kind of vices.

“Many youths who finish school do not have jobs to do, but they have to eat; they have to have a home, etc, so how do they do that if not engaging in crime?

Applauding some state governments which are genuinely creating empowerment programmes for their youths, he stated that it should be a challenge to others to follow suit.

According to him, there is no reason why some state governments, in liaison with their local governments not have marshal development plans in agriculture, given the abundance of farmlands and productive work force in such states.

The governments would initiate massive agriculture and farm development schemes, provide basic tools and matching funds, and engage these youths.

“With this, you would have created many jobs, waged war against crime, and started a revolution for food availability”, Ambassador Ajadi observed.
