Surrender your illegal firearms now to the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters or have yourself to blame later. That is the warning from the police to residents of Osun.
The State Police Command issued the warning today, through Superintendent of Police, Yemisi Opalola, who is the Osun Police Spokesperson, in its bid to checkmate illegal arms proliferation in the state
Opalola who made the directive known via in a statement, explained that the move was in compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
“In compliance with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, toward ensuring serene society and enforcing law and order in the country as well as efforts by the Police High Command to curb the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the state, the Osun State Police Command is using this medium to call on members of the public who are in possession of illegal firearms to submit them at the Divisional Police Headquarters nearest to them.

“The directive is targeted at addressing the proliferation and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms in the state.” she said
She, however, explained that there is no punitive measures attached to the submission of the illegal firearms, adding that no one will be arrested/ detained.She enjoined members of the public to go to the Police Station nearest to them and freely submit arms in their possession
The Eagle reports that the directive on illegal firearms comes on the heels of a curfew by the state government, following reported killings between Ilobu and Ifon-Orolu communities.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement issued by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi on Sunday, had declared curfew in the two towns to enforce law and order.
“This is to inform the public that the attention of the Osun state government has been drawn to the communal clash on land dispute between Ilobu and Ifon Communities.“Based on this, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed that Curfew begins immediately in the two local governments: Orolu and Irepodun local governments.
“The Curfew will start between the hours of 8pm every night, and 6am in the morning. Human and vehicular movement is hereby restricted during the curfew till further notice.READ ALSO: Man In Police Net As Mutilated Body Of Ex-Lover Found In His Home
“This is to forestall attempts of destruction of lives and properties during this period, because of the land dispute.“Anyone caught wandering or moving around in Irepodun and Orolu local governments during the curfew period will be arrested and prosecuted appropriately”, the directive had said.
