’13 Years of Darkness’ — Ikeja Electric’s Anniversary Sparks Outrage Among Customers

Ikeja Electric’s celebration of its 13th anniversary has drawn angry reactions from customers who used the occasion to complain about prolonged power outages, missing transformers and difficulties obtaining prepaid meters.

In an anniversary message posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account, the electricity distribution company reflected on its role in powering homes, businesses and everyday activities.

“Energy does more than light up spaces; it powers dreams, sustains businesses and makes everyday life possible,” the company wrote.

It added that these goals had been at the heart of its journey for 13 years and thanked customers for being part of its story, while reaffirming its commitment to “Bringing Energy to Life, Responsibly.”

But some customers responding to the post had a different account of what the anniversary meant to them.

Demola Adefajo complained that residents of Isefun, Ayobo, had been without electricity for a week.

“No thanks for supplying us darkness in Isefun, Ayobo for the past one week!” Adefajo wrote.

Another user, Rash, was equally critical of the celebration, describing Ikeja Electric as the “most useless company celebrating 13 years of darkness.”

The anger was not limited to Ayobo. A customer identified as IGBO-NA-EFE-EGO also complained about an outage in Oke-Afa, writing: “It shall never be well with you people foe over a week we don’t have light at oke-afa.”

For another customer, Oluwaseun Akinjiyan, the problem had reportedly lasted much longer. Akinjiyan alleged that residents of Adeola Street and neighbouring areas off AIT Road, Kola Alagbado, had been without electricity for five months after their transformer was removed.

“@IkejaElectric @ieServe @NERCNG Adeola street and its environs off Ait rd Kola Alagbado LAGOS ( Band A area) has been in darkness for 5months now since you took the transformer away. Just darkness and pure silence,” Akinjiyan wrote, tagging Ikeja Electric, its customer service account and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

However, the he did not establish why the transformer was removed or provide further details about the reported outage.

Another customer, PorPorLee, raised concerns about residents having to shoulder the cost of electricity infrastructure themselves.

“We bought 2 new transformer as a community still tasking ourselves for the accessories too you this Rogue Organization,” the customer wrote.

While some customers focused on the lack of electricity, others questioned the process of obtaining prepaid meters.

A user identified as dunnyd asked the company to explain why residents in their area could not obtain a prepaid meter because the location was reportedly classified as an Intelligent Data Box (IDB) area.

“@IkejaElectric can you explain while we can’t get a prepaid meter in my location, you people are Saying because our location is a Intelligent Data Box (IDB) location? Please who introduced this to our location, we want a prepaid meter please,” the customer wrote.

Other replies showed that the anniversary message had done little to calm customers who said they were still waiting for electricity.

A customer identified as arobadiomololu complained about a three-day outage, writing: “Una sense don lost. No light since 3 days now even but una dey post.”

A. Jr. Gi also questioned the company’s record after 13 years, writing: “13 years later and y’all are still shit.”

The reactions turned Ikeja Electric’s anniversary post into a thread of complaints about outages, transformer costs and access to prepaid meters.

For the customers who responded, the occasion was less about celebrating 13 years of operations and more about drawing attention to the electricity problems they say remain unresolved.
