Southeast traditional rulers on an issue of common interest. Is the proposed creation of Orlu State one of it?

A bill seeking to create another state from the Southeast – Orlu State from the current imo State has passed its first reading at the House of Representatives.

To be called Orlu State, the bill was sponsored by was sponsored by Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, member representing Ideato North South Federal Constituency of Imo State, along with other co-supporters.

If it scales the other hurdles to become law, it would bring to 37, the number of states thus far existing in the country.
it would also help the southeast have six states like other others within the region.

Not only would the emergence of Orlu State, alter international geopgraphical mappings, it would also affect the structureal political balance in the southeast region.

This is because the proposed state, would would automatically affect the 1999 Constitution,
would be carved out from three southeast states as presently constituted thus: Imo, Abia, and Anambra.

Hon. Ugochinyere, while sponsoring the bill, appealed to other law makers to lend their support to the bill, which he said would lead to the emergence of Ideato as a senatorial district.

It’s worth mentioning that unlike other geopolitical zones in Nigeria, which have a minimum of six states, the Southeast only has five.
