Pregnant Women In Ibadan Indicted Of Heavy Alcohol Consumption

Pregnant women in Ibadan have been indicted of heavy alcohol consumption.

In fact, one in every eight pregnant women there is believed to indulge in heavy drinking of alcohol.

A study on alcohol consumption and tobacco exposure among pregnant women in Ibadan made these damning conclusions.

It added that palm wine and beer were consumed by 52 per cent and 12 per cent respectively, of pregnant women in Ibadan, wondering why this is so, when there is no safe limit for alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

The Eagle reports the National Library of Medicine as noting that when a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it goes to the baby through her bloodstream.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy should therefore avoided since it could cause fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), a serious condition that can affect a child throughout life.

Other deductions by the institution on the subject matter are that:

-Children with FAS have problems with development, learning, behaviour and social skills.

-What is known is that the more alcoholic drinks a pregnant woman has, the more damage may be done to her baby.

-Binge drinking — having five or more alcoholic drinks at a time — is very dangerous for an unborn baby.
