Poverty Alleviation In China: A Model For Global Emulation

The subject of poverty alleviation in China, one of the world’s largest economies, has in the recent engaged closer widespread attention.

The Chinese ambassador to Liberia, By H.E.Ren Yisheng, gave credence to this reality during the country’s recent independence anniversary celebration:

“In addition to its weak foundations and uneven development, the nation had long been plagued by poverty at a scale and a level of severity that has rarely been seen anywhere else in the world. As a result, the challenge of poverty alleviation in China almost defies imagination”.

The tide however is changing. From initially typifying poverty and underdevelopment, China has become a ready reference for progress across the key indices of human development.

These would not have been without the right kind of leadership, what you could call the peculiar China leadership style, backed with Marshall economic plans over time.

Thus, success in poverty alleviation has come first, mobilizing the right kind of will within government and the followership, mounting the right kind of policies, and prioritising human capacity or human capital building and development.

It has seen the country of 1.4 billion people by official records, consolidate production efficiency, trade competitiveness and precision in science and technology.

Commending the Communist Party of China (CPC) for success in the fight against poverty, Ambassador Yisheng said:

“Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the Party Central Committee, with General Secretary Xi Jinping at the core, has fought a decisive battle against poverty that is unprecedented in scale and intensity, and has benefited the largest number of people in human history”

Last February, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xi Jinping confidently declared that China had comprehensively won the fight against poverty, in fact eliminated extreme poverty.

Backing his stance with a white paper “Poverty Alleviation: China’s Experience and Contribution”, he said this had a predication on a number of deliberate policies, resulting in 10 million people on the average being lifted off poverty each year from 2012 when the CPC held an 18^th congress.

Current poverty standard, indicates that 770 million rural poor people in China have been lifted out of poverty.

By World Bank’s International Poverty Standards, China’s poverty alleviation population accounts for more than 70% of the global poverty alleviation population.

It shows China achieving the first target of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule, a document sighted by The Eagle indicates, showing China making important contributions to the world’s poverty alleviation and in development.

In April, the World Bank affirmed that over the past 40 years, the number of people in China with incomes below $1.90 per day had fallen by close to 800 million.

“With this, China has contributed close to three-quarters of the global reduction in the number of people living in extreme poverty. At China’s current national poverty line, the number of poor fell by 770 million over the same period”, it added.
