Overseas-Bound Young Man Dies Inside Grave, During Fortification Ritual

A fortification ritual of one and a half hours for an overseas-bound young man has ended in tragedy: he has died in the process.

The victim, identified as Chikwado Eze, from Ugbaike community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu state, agreed to be buried alive for one hour and thirty minutes, but when it was time to come out, he had died.

The incident which has been confirmed by the Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police has stirred the entire community and beyond, even as the native doctor, 48 year old Mr. Enuwa Odugu and the father of the deceased, Uwakwe Eze (67), have been arrested by the police.

Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement confirmed that the two are being held for conspiracy and the murder of the 26-year-old Chikwado Celestine Eze.

“A native doctor, one Enuwa Odugu ‘m’, aged 48, and Uwakwe Eze ‘m’, aged 67, were arrested for conspiracy and the murder of Eze’s 26-year-old son, one Chikwado Celestine Eze”, he said in a statement, adding”

“The incident is alleged to have occurred when Uwakwe Eze took his son to the native doctor’s shrine for rituals intended to fortify him with charms.

“However, during the ritual, the deceased was buried in a coffin but unfortunately died in the process. “He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead by the attending doctor, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

According to police report, the native doctor while confessing to the crime, and also similar rituals in the past, is however blaming the victim’s for not following success ritual rules as prescribed to him.

However, he would have to cool off at the police station for now, while investigations on the fortification ritual continue.

Meanwhile, the issue has led to a lot of reactions, moreso, criticism, over the get-rich quick syndrome becoming more pronounced in the society.
