There are concerns that a long dowry list presented to a prospective suitor may force him to cancel his marriage proposal.

They dowry list is long it could even build a two bedroom house, in a situation where average households are complaining about economic challenges.

The prospective suitor, Kenyan Heyi Gregory has seen himself taking a necessary step towards settling down, reports Nairobi News but is so shocked he is now considering what next line of action to take.

Heyi Gregory has more than enough reasons to worry, number one being that There are two separate lists, and items contained in them, include a total of 84 goats, 12 cows, three 10,000 liters water tanks. 40 liters of traditional beer, four standard sixe blankets and bed sheets each, two crates of ripe bananas and three crates of sodas.

Part concern is what purpose 84 goats would serve with the price of an average goat at Sh 7,000 (about fifty seven dollars). The implication is that the suitor should shop for 5,000 dollars alone on goats.

Other items on the list are honey or 100 kilograms of sugar, 12 sets of 12 stems of sugarcane, Four 90kg bags of maize and two 90 kg of beans,

Furthermore, the bride’s mother is to be presented with mother’s basket, an ‘envelope’ for the parents and another one for the older male relatives.

Beyond the face value, the prospective suitor has been told by people of a possibility of the list being exaggerated.

Though bride price payments is a largely controversial in Africa, a Wikipedia report submits that the tradition also prevails in many Asian countries, the Middle East, and in some Pacific Island societies.

The amount varies from custom to custom, but can be high as to raise concerns.

Even in Igbo societies where bride prices are believed to be high, families are at liberty to just accept a token.

Late John Chimezie, a traditional title holder in Amegbu-Ato, while giving out his daughter in marriage a few years ago, had after receiving a token, literally returned the money asserting that he was not selling his daughter.

“I accept this five thousand naira as a show of love and respect for tradition. All I want from you, is to take care of my daughter”, he had told the suitor.
