Let Me Tell You Reason For Crazy Bills –Eko Distribution Co. MD

Nigerian public electricity consumers have been groaning about crazy bills regularly slammed on them by electricity distribution companies, but do they know the real reason for it?

Well, a man who should know has come forward to tell it.

He is no other than the Managing Director (MD) of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), Dr Tinuade Sanda .

Dr Tinuade Sanda who spoke through the company’s Chief Finance Officer, Mr Joseph Ezenwa at a customer engagement forum in Lagos today, said the reason was nothing else than illegal by-passing of meters.

As a result, she has advised on the need for every customers to be vigilant on those engaging in energy theft in the communities.

“As a company, we bill accurately based on consumption on very feeders, while we also discover that some customers engaged in energy theft within the communities”, she informed, adding these underscore her point for consumers to really be vigilant.

Dr Tinuade Sanda addressed a forum of stakeholders from the different localities of Orile District.

Among these were Orile, Ikate, Doyin Zone, Animashaun, Surulere, Aguda and Coker.

Explaining the reason for the town hall meeting, she said it provided the opportunity for the company and electricity consumers to interact.

Such interactions, according to her, makes possible solutions to identified problems, leading to better service delivery.

She also revealed that her company had commenced metering, through a scheme she described as Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme.

Under it, meters are installed within ten working day once the customer had paid the due fees.

According to her, it is an initiative of the Federal Government, where meters were provided to customers for free, the goal of the initiative was to meter our entire population within five years (2025).

The issue of crazy bills is a long and widespread challenge in Nigeria.

Many people who had wanted to run away from constant power outages went for meters of their own, only to encounter crazy bills.

This has worsened their woes leading to constant and regular complains in the country.
