How Personal Ego, Supremacy Are Jeopardising Lives In Healthcare Sector

Personal ego and a feeling of supremacy amongst colleagues have been affecting effective delivery in the nation’s healthcare sector jeopardizing lives.

The rivalry is such that if not addressed urgently could leave severe consequences in the sector particularly and the nation generally.

These revelations are coming off a keynote presentation today at the Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto, Consultant Pediatrics Neurologist, and formerly Provost of the College of Health Sciences , Professor Hamidu Ahmad the issue calls for urgent attention and resolution

His presentation was titled ” Challenges of Health Sciences Education ” and he identified greed, selfishness and lack of patriotism among some healthcare providers, as causative factors.

According to him, this was a clear departure from the past, as such attitudes were completely absent as, instead, there was harmony, teamwork and brotherhood rather than rancour.

Rather than position rivalry and greed, which he said were detrimental to the growth and  development of the professions, healthcare practitioners should consider themselves as subordinates.

The same way, key segments of government like ministries and departments should see themselves as pursuing the same goal, as a way of bringing efficiency to their work.

They should see their jobs and roles as interdependent for the sheer good of the society.

Professor Ahmad went ahead to list other issues he considered as no less challenges affecting the sector, including shortage of manpower, lack of infrastructure like advanced and relevant equipment, as well as research actualisation.

Aside personal ego, other challenges are desired educational progressions and habitable environment in health science education.
