Danger looms in two neighbourhoods in Lagos for now, and you would be wise to avoid going there except you want to risk being attacked.

We mean the Igbogbo Bayeku areas of Ikorodu, Lagos State, where two people are already lying dead.

The reason is that two rival cults, the Aiye and Eiye confraternities went for each other’s jugular yesterday from about 6:30 pm with dangerous weapons flying about.

In the interim the deaths were recorded while a number of people went home with injuries, but there are no clear assurances yet that the situation has been brought under meaningful control.

Reports say the community bus stop was the scene of confrontation after one of the groups allegedly encroached on what was supposed to be the rival’s area of influence.

One of the groups was holding a party at the spot before things went haywire.

With danger starring them in the face, people took to their heels even as the combatants engaged themselves leading to the loss of lives and sustaining of injuries.

“Some cultists came to the Community bus stop on motorcycles where some members of a rival group were having fun. A fight later ensued among them and one of them was shot dead.

“Immediately, the motorcycles zoomed towards Macaulay and the rival group also chased after them in retaliation, thereby killing one of them” a Punch report on the matter said, adding: “People ran away on seeing what was happening.

“There is apprehension at Macaulay, Community down to Ilado. We call on the police to come to our rescue because the residents are living in fear.”

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reportedly promised getting back to the reporter as to provide details.

“We have asked the DPO to go and find out what is happening there and get back to us, so I’m waiting for the DPO’s response. When he gets back to us, I’m going to make a statement on it.”

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested nine teenagers and four others over alleged cultism.

In the recent, those areas of Ikorodu have become danger zones. This is because clashes have become a recurring incident with residents usually vulnerable.

This also happens despite regular intervention by security agencies.

The Eagle reports that last November for example, the police had vowed to contain the Ikorodu insecurity by arresting those behind it.

In a statement quoting the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, it said it had given a matching order to Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Department via Police Wireless Message that miscreants, cultists, and hoodlums must be sniffed out of their hideouts, arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

“In compliance with the order, police operatives attached to Mushin Division of the command have arrested some suspected cultists that were on the rampage at Moroluke/Wey Street, Mushin on 8th November, 2020 at about 10 pm.
