Conviction over multiple sexual assault cases have earned 57-year-old Anthony Odiong, a reverend father life imprisonment.
He was sentenced following his conviction in a Texas, United States court over multiple serious sexual assault charges involving several women.
Ten of such testified against the clergyman, accusing him of sexually assaulting them over a period of time. The allegations presented in court formed the basis of the charges that ultimately led to his conviction.
Prosecutors further told the court that one of the victims became pregnant as a result of the alleged abuse, a detail that was considered during sentencing. The case, which has drawn significant attention in both Nigeria and the United States, centred on accusations of abuse of trust and violation of pastoral authority.

Following the conclusion of the trial, the court found him guilty on multiple counts and sentenced him to life imprisonment, marking one of the most severe penalties under Texas law for such offences. Texas authorities described the case as a serious breach of public trust, particularly given the accused’s position as a religious leader.
The convicted clergyman, Reverend Father Anthony Odiong, is reported to have maintained his innocence during parts of the proceedings, although the jury ultimately sided with the prosecution after reviewing testimonies and evidence presented in court.
The allegations against him included repeated incidents of sexual assault involving multiple complainants, all of whom testified in court about their experiences. The prosecution argued that the offences demonstrated a pattern of predatory behaviour over time.
