All has not been told about the tragedy that befell alleged illegal miners held at the Niger State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) cell.
Recent revelations are that they drank urine or sweat in the course of their detention in the 12 square meter cell because they didn’t have access to drinking water.
It was a small sized cell, yet 50 male detainees, including children, were confined there.
“The Committee finds that officers responsible for the cells failed to reduce the overcrowding, ignored prolonged cries and banging of the cell door and wall and did not provide emergency help,” a report submitted by the Independent Investigation Committee, of the Federal Ministry of Interior said in part.
The report also found that the toilet to the male cell was mal-functional with no running water.
Also, those who testified, complained of overcrowding in the cell, resulting in extreme heat and dehydration.
