Armed Police Escort ‘Accidentally Shoots’ Governor’s Sister

An armed Police escort has accidentally shot Atsi Kefas, a sister to Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba.

The shooting reportedly took place during an attack by gunmen on Thursday.

This was made known by a counter-insurgency publication specialising in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama.

It said the shooting by the armed security escort occurred along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

According to the report, Jumai, the governor’s mother, and Atsi were traveling when they were ambushed by gunmen, prompting a police officer attached to them to respond.

The bullet fired by the armed police escort however went the wrong way hitting Atsi, the report said, adding that the victim was promptly evacuated from the scene by troops who immediately intervened.

In the aftermath of the attack, troops swiftly intervened, rescuing the victim and evacuating from the scene using an air ambulance.

As at the time of this report, it was not however clear, her condition, but vehicles used by the attackers had been recovered, expected to help the police in getting to the roots of the attack.

The Eagle reports the governor stating last month, that how to deal with series of security issues was a major challenge when he mounted the saddle.

According to him, he met a state that was practically under the control of gangs and bandits who were already making daring inroads into the state capital, Jalingo, with bold kidnappings of citizens.

A statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Digital Communications), Emmanuel Bello, stated in part: “Governor Kefas had no illusion that securing our state was his primary concern and mandate.

“As a retired soldier of the intelligence corp, he knew this was an area his legacy would be seriously scrutinised.

“He then told himself and his team that he wanted to change the narratives. When he came in, the state was inundated with all sorts of attacks from bandits. Some of the criminals took over strategic areas of the state on the hills.

“As we speak to you, a serious clearing project has dealt with that decisively”, he had said at the time.

With the latest development, it is clear that it not yet uhuru in terms of security in the state.
