Suarez Hails Nunez As His Uruguay Successor 

Darwin Nunez has been praised by Luis Suarez, who also hinted that the Liverpool star will be his successor for the Uruguay national team.

The 24-year-old striker scored twice as Uruguay crushed Bolivia 3-0 in their CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday. Nunez was replaced by seasoned forward Luis Suarez in the 73rd minute of play. Following the game, Suarez singled out the Liverpool star for praise, calling him one of the world’s top No. 9s.

Speaking to reporters after the match, the former Barcelona and Liverpool star said of Nunez, who could inherit his No.9 shirt in the future: “I have one of the best No 9s in the world ahead of me. We have to support him and enjoy him. Today I am in another role [than before] and I am happy to be here helping the group.”

Nunez, a former great player for Benfica, signed with the Reds in 2022. In his debut season, he played in 42 games across all competitions and scored 15 goals. In 2023–24, he should surpass that number because he has already tallied seven goals and provided six assists in just 17 games.

Liverpool fans will now hope that Nunez translates his form for Uruguay to club level. Jurgen Klopp‘s men are set to face off against Manchester City on Saturday in what promises to be a fascinating top-of-the-table clash.
