END SARS Protesters Block Lekki Toll Gate, Force People To Trek

Vehicles on both sides of the Lekki expressway have been blocked at the toll gate by the Lekki expressway, at a little after noon, by End SARS protesters, The Eagle can report.

The protesters not only forced commuters to disembark, but also ordered the drivers back.

As a result many people have begun a long trek to their destinations.

Our correspondent at the scene reports that the area had become chaotic, despite the presence of policemen and soldiers.

the drivers in a bid to avoid being caught ina crossfire quickly did a U-turn but some were magnanimous enough to refund part of the fares paid by passengers,.

“The bus I entered dropped us and refunded me N300 out of the N1200 we paid from Berger”, a commuter told our correspondent, adding that she and her friends who were heading to the beach were now on the trek.

Most drivers did not anticipate a blockade and resorted to panic measures as soon they sighted the protesters, who were shouting: “We didn’t vote IGP; we voted Buhari. Where is Buhari?”.

At the Ogba bus stop this morning, a huge crowd of the End SARS protesters could also be seen massing about the bus stop, just a little opposite the police station, but there were no incidents as at the time our correspondent got to the spot.

However a retired Police Commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda, founder of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known today as SARS, has reportedly traced the current problem with the squad to it deviating from the original concept.

 “SARS deviated from the original concept. The controversies engulfing SARS today will not disappear unless they return to the original concept.

They should undergo re-orientation and thereafter, disappear from public view and remain faceless. “They should avoid receiving direct complaints from members of the public as most cases received that way will eventually be civil issue but printed in armed robbery colour”

Recall that in deference to wide spread campaigned against the recent unconstitutional conduct of SARS operatives, protesting with a hashtag, ENDSARSNOW, ENDPOLICEBRUTALITYNOW, WEDONTNEEDSARSNOW, amongst others, that the Inspector General of Police dissolved SARS.

He noted that all officers and men serving in the unit would be redeployed to other police commands, formations and units.

He also promised to come up with a policing arrangement that would best tackle the offences of armed robbery and other violent crimes in the country.

Why the protests on the Lekki axis persisted despite this move by the police authorities remains a riddle for now.
