Why Mason Greenwood Has ‘No Great Desire’ To Play For Man Utd

Mason Greenwood is “reluctant” to rejoin Manchester United even if Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated that a new choice on his future would be made.

Ratcliffe appears to be giving the attacker the opportunity to maybe restart his career at Old Trafford by stating that the team would make a new decision regarding Greenwood after his half takeover. According to The Athletic, Greenwood is “reluctant” to play for the Red Devils once more and has “no great desire” to do so. According to reports, the 22-year-old feels that United “could have supported him better” regarding his legal matter and that he will be under “greater pressure and scrutiny” if he plays in the Premier League again.

Greenwood is now spending the entire season on loan with Getafe, where in 25 appearances, he has five assists and seven goals. Getafe has stated that although they might not have the money to finalise a deal, they would like to hang onto the winger. Greenwood might, however, choose to remain in Spain. According to reports, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, two of La Liga’s biggest teams, are both after the attacker. Angel Torres, the president of Getafe, even asserted that Greenwood “would suit” in Barcelona.

When The Athletic questioned Ratcliffe about Greenwood following the Premier League’s approval of his 25 percent ownership in United, he said, “He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football. So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. There is no decision that’s been made. The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”

Ratcliffe will take a “fresh” look at the Greenwood situation but The Athletic adds he is mindful “fans would require an explanation” if he were to return to the club. The new owner is also eager to avoid a repeat of last summer, where the club made a dramatic U-turn and decided to let Greenwood go after a backlash from fans. Greenwood saw criminal charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped in February 2023.

Although it’s unclear what lies next for him, Greenwood will finish the season at Getafe. With the possibility for an additional year, his contract with Manchester United runs until 2025. The Red Devils are apparently holding out for a payment of €40 million (£34 million/$43 million) for the academy graduate.
