Police Arrests House Of Assembly Member, Former LG Chairman For Banditry

The police says it has arrested a House of Assembly member, and a former local government chairman in connection with banditry in the state.

The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, Muhammad Dalijan, made the announcement today while hosting the officer in charge of the Counterterrorism Unit, under the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime, Thomas Parker, at the command headquarters in Gusau, the state capital.

He however did not name the said lawmaker and former council chairman  who indulged in the banditry.

The Eagle reports different cases of crime in that region of the country.

In March alone, about 30 persons were kidnapped by suspected bandits at Kasai village in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State.

In two separate cases or related criminal activities, they stormed a mosque in Zamfara, taking some worshippers away, while killing a man, abducted his wife and a neighbor in another operation there.

Dalijan appealed to the UN agency for capacity building towards investigating and establishing forensic laboratories to quicken the prosecution of suspected criminals.

The meeting provided opportunity for the UN officer to state why the delegation came.

According to him, the visit was informed by an of  Governor Dauda Lawal to the UN to assist the state in tackling the insecurity surrounding it.

Dalijan added that the UN was ready to conduct an assessment of the security situation first to understand the causes and challenges and how to help deal with the threats.
