As members of her family made their way to Scotland to be with the 96-year-old monarch, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II is under medical monitoring because doctors are “concerned for Her Majesty’s health.”

The announcement comes a day after the queen was instructed to take a day off and canceled a Privy Council meeting. On Tuesday, Queen presided over the ceremonial handover of power to new Prime Minister Liz Truss at her vacation residence in Scotland at Balmoral Castle.

In a statement, the palace said “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.”

According to Truss, who was told on the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime as she made a statement in the House of Commons, “will be very concerning for the whole country.”

“My thoughts — and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom — are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time,” she said on Twitter.

Elizabeth marked seven decades on the throne this year. She has increasingly handed over duties to her heir, Prince Charles, and other royal family members in recent months as she has struggled to get around.
