Ibadan Explosion 2024: Truths, Causes, and What To Do

At about 7:44 pm Tuesday, 16th January, residents of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State were thrown into a state of panic, following a loud explosion that rocked the city.

Rumours stemmed from different victims and residents, alleging to be the cause of the unfortunate incident.

Initially, some residents claimed a certain Gasland filling station was the cause of the explosion, leading to the collapse of one Ace Mall.

Another resident said the explosion was caused by a fire outbreak in a house which spread to another. As a result, the house the fire spread to had dynamites used by some miners who are residents of the area, which in turn touched the dynamite and that immediately led to the explosion that grounded the houses.

Truths and Causes

However, information obtained from authorities has proven all these assertions otherwise.

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command said that the cause is still unknown, but have launched an investigation, however, the impact was felt at about 500m radius 3.

The explosion happened around Dejo Oyelese Close, Off Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija.

This was confirmed on its official X page, stating, “Explosion around Dejo Oyelese Street Bodija Ibadan around 7:44pm today Tuesday 17/01/2024. The cause of the explosion is unknown.Number of Dead and Injured yet unknown as search continues. Ample deployment on ground Updates coming up soon.”

What To Do

Meanwhile, the Oyo State governor has instructed hospitals to admit anyone who’s brought in from the explosion site and start attending to them immediately as reports from the government reveal over 77 casualties have been counted so far.

All residents in the affected areas are advised to leave their house this evening, just in case of a secondary explosion.

All hotels are to allow people who come in from the explosion site and around it. The state government will settle them.

Do not panic, security officials and emergency workers are on ground at the scene to maintain order and ensure that lives are saved.
