The first Nigerian casualty of the corona virus epidemic has officially been announced.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control says it is a 67 year old man who just returned from the United Kingdom.
The NCDC via its Twitter handle, @NCDCgov, on Monday said, “The first #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded. The case was a 67-year-old male who returned home following medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
“He had underlying medical conditions- multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy.”
The centre also announced five new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria including two in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), two in Lagos State and one in Edo State.
It said there are 35 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria and two have been discharged
In a related development, NCDC also announced that Edo State has recorded its first confirmed coronavirus case.
The NCDC said an additional five cases of the virus were recorded on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in Nigeria to 35.
“Five new cases of #COVID19 have been confirmed in Nigeria: two in Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), two in Lagos State and one in Edo State.
“Two cases are returning travellers from the United Kingdom. As of 09:45 am on 23rd of March, there are 35 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria. Two have been discharged.”
