Eggs And Meat Shortage Hit Norway Again

It hasn’t been a particularly pleasant week for households in Norway as they have had to contend with eggs and meat shortage.

That is double Jeopardy given the high prices that groceries had attracted in the yuletide.

Reports monitored by the Eagle shows items were notoriously expensive at shopping outlets, but worse was that households couldn’t see to buy.

Norway faced a nationwide egg shortage last year, which only began to ease out as 2024 wore on, but which impact was heavy to be forgotten easily.

Local media reports indicate a noticeable lack of fresh fish, various meats, bacon and eggs at outlets.

A spokesman for a cooperative group has reportedly linked the eggs and meat shortage to the yuletide which disrupted production and delivery for up to two weeks

Aside workers taking days off to celebrate the holidays, there have been references to  “pricing battles”, which forced consumers to stockpile essentials like sweets, cheeses and seasonal products.

In the financial year, Norway has not fared badly economy wise, going by indices from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) of which she is a member.

Mainland Gross Domestic Product (GDP) strengthened somewhat since early 2024, owing in part to government expenditure.

“Petroleum activity, while volatile, has remained buoyant over the same period”; however,  high inflation and large debt servicing costs have weighed on household consumption.

“Due to high interest rates, housing investment has contracted since early 2023, while business investment growth excluding the offshore sector has remained weak”.

It is expected that it’s sensitive government would not however let the eggs and meat shortage last, for obvious reasons.
