Kano Electric Shares Details Of Mass Metering Programme

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced details of an ambitious Mass Metering Poogramme which would gulp $5oo million.

The project would cover its franchise areas under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP).

In a statement on Wednesday by its head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani, Kano Electric said the Mass Metering Poogramme is backed by a $500 million loan from the World Bank.

It said it would help to improve the financial and technical performance of electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) through the large-scale deployment of advanced prepaid meters and Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS).

The company describes the project as marking a milestone towards closing the metering gap, eliminating estimated billing, and boosting customer confidence.

At least 128,000 prepaid meters are expected to be installed free of charge for customers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States.

The statement also quotes the Managing Director/CEO of KEDCO, Dr. Abubakar S. Jimeta, said the initiative aligns with the company’s transformation agenda.

“The metering initiative is not just about installing devices; it’s about improving service delivery, customer satisfaction, and financial sustainability for the betterment of the power sector,” the statement quoted him as adding.

He explained that the exercise will focus on metering existing unmetered customers and replacing faulty meters, following a structured and transparent plan.
