Chelsea Will Take Fresh Transfer Approach – Pochettino

Chelsea has been spending a lot of money on youth since 2022, but manager Mauricio Pochettino has indicated that this summer, a new strategy would be implemented.

Over the previous two years, Chelsea has been the most expensive and contentious team in the Premier League. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the team, the Blues have spent over £1 billion on players, the majority of whom are young. But the results haven’t followed the money trail, and after two seasons with four different managers, it looks like common sense may have finally set in at the top as Pochettino hinted that the team may want to add more seasoned players this summer.

Speaking to the media, Pochettino said [via The Standard]: “We can keep going in the same way with the policy [to sign young players].

“But in the squad, we have Thiago Silva, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Bettinelli. Maybe Marcus isn’t playing but he does a fantastic job helping the young guys.

“We have experienced players in the squad. It is not going against the project to have some players who are helping the young guys to perform, to be professional, and to understand what it means to be in the Premier League and to be at Chelsea.

“We need to talk and decide the strategy for next season.”

According to Pochettino’s remarks, he thinks he will remain in Boehly’s plans once this season ends, and the Argentine made exactly that statement. He disclosed that even in the event that the London-based team is not able to qualify for Europe next season, he will still be with the team. The ownership’s intentions, if any, won’t be made public until the end of the season.

Speaking to the media, he said [via Chelsea News]: “Will I stay without European football? Of course, because when I arrived here, we already knew that we were not going to compete in Europe. And I said yes to the project and the idea to come here and to build, you know, a squad to be competitive and to try to reach this level. So yes, that is no problem for me.”

The season has seen Pochettino’s team struggle with numerous poor performances, made worse by an injury plague that has followed Chelsea’s key players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Christopher Nkunku. They are now two points ahead of Bournemouth, who are in 13th place in the Premier League, although they are in the top half of the standings.

The FA Cup and Premier League European spots are still up for grabs for the Blues, and winning either one might keep Pochettino in his position for the time being. Later today, they play Everton, and a victory may move them up to within one point of seventh-place West Ham.
