Ex-Barca Star Dani Alves Jailed Over Sexual Assault 

Former Barcelona star, Dani Alves has been handed a jail sentence of four years and six months in jail after being found guilty of sexual assault.

The former Barcelona and Brazil player was found guilty by a Spanish court of raping a woman in a nightclub in December 2002. The 40-year-old was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and was also mandated to pay €150,000 to the victim. Alves was taken into custody in January 2023 and has remained there ever since his bail pleas were denied. The former football player was facing a nine-year prison sentence, according to the prosecution.

A statement read: “The sentence considers that it has been proven that the victim did not consent, and that there is evidence, in addition to the testimony of the plaintiff, to consider the rape proven.”

During the three-day trial, the Brazilian denied any wrongdoing. When questioned if he had coerced the woman into having sex with him, Alves responded to the court, “I am not that type of man,” according to ESPN. Prosecutors were informed by the victim that she voluntarily entered a VIP bath with Alves, but he did not allow her out and thereafter raped and slapped her.

According to The Athletic, Alves has been sentenced to five more years of “supervised” freedom upon his release from prison in addition to his imprisonment term. In addition, the Brazilian is prohibited from approaching his victim within a kilometre and is not allowed to speak with her for nine years.
