Today is her anniversary, 67 years after that her infamous jail for being adamant fighting for her rights..

The incident happened in a public bus, December 1, 1955 when she refused to give up her seat for a whiteman.

That action was considered offensive and a violation of of the segregation laws in place in that city at that time.

He jailing however led to a string of national and global reactions, and was also to propel, the young Baptist Minister known as Martin Luther King Jr to global reckoning.

Luther King Jr spearheaded a bus boycott in Montgomery in protest to the way that Park was treated.

In 1955, Parks entered a bus at her turn, but she was asked by the bus driver to leave the row of four seats in a section reserved for whites and instead join the back of the bus.

The woman refused, and this sparked protests and eventual boycott of buses in Montgomery, an Alabama neigbourhood.

To drive home their point, blacks began riding in black owned cabs, or walked their distance rather than join the city’s buses for such act of racial segregation against Parks.

Some people were said to have walked as long as 20 miles in protest, in a protest coordinated by Luther King Jr.

Despite efforts to frustrate her court cases at the local level, there was a turn of events in November 1956 when a higher court ruled bus segregation as unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Her full name is Rosa Louise McCauley and she was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her parents were Leona (née Edwards), a teacher, and James McCauley, a carpenter.

She had a challenging childhood in that she suffered both personal health challenges and the emotional stress of her parents’ separation.

Rosa followed her mother to Pine Level, near Montgomery, and later grew up on a farm with her maternal grandparents. It was her mother who taught her which she furthered while in school.

At the time, Parks was employed as a seamstress at a local department store but overtime, she attended trainings and education that helped shapen her beliefs.

She was to be fired from the job later and also received series of threats to her life, but she remained remained undaunted until she retired.
