Senator Ovie Omo-Agege
The senate has suspended Ovie Omo-Agege, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Delta state, for 90 legislative days.
Omo-Agege was suspended by the Senate during the plenary on Thursday, April 12.
The suspension of the Delta Central lawmaker was recommended by the Senate Committee on Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges which investigated him over comment on the reordering of electoral timetable.
The report which was submitted by the Committee Chairman, Senator Samuel Anyanwu explained that the erring Delta Central lawmaker declined to speak to the committee when he appeared.
The upper legislative chamber took the decision after it considered a report by its ethics committee.
The committee had recommended that senator be suspended for 181 days but the senate reduced it after pleas from lawmakers.
Though the Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan pleaded that he should not be suspended, however, Nigeria’s Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki could not be dissuaded by the appeal from Senator Lawan and Senator Kabir Marafa.
Omo-Agege was one of the senators who kicked against the election reordering bill.
Although he apologised for his stand, he still went to the court to get a restraining order against any move by the senate to suspend him.
His action was said to have angered some of his colleagues who pushed for his suspension.
