This Woman Is About To Become Next Vice Chancellor Of UNILAG

This woman whose photo you are starring at has entered the queue to becoming the next Vice Chancellor of Nigeria’s university of first choice, the University of Lagos.

Professor Folasade Ogunsola by name, she has already won the favour of the highest number of members of the UNILAG’s Senate, necessary to being chosen as acting VC.

She scored 135 of of the total 167 votes cast at the electon with her closest rival,  Prof. Ben Ogbojafor scoring 31 votes.

Until the latest development, Ogunsola had been Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services in the Akoka-based citadel of higher learning.

She became the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution in 2017.

Chairman of the Senate Emergency Committee, Prof. Chioma Agomo, also announced the result of the emergence of Prof Ogunsola to journalists after the election.

Recall that the Federal Government had last week, directed the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Wale Babalakin (SAN), and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by the President  Muhammadu Buhari

The former had seen to the sacking of the latter over sundry issues setting up the stage for internal crisis in the ivory tower.

His removal was announced during a meeting of the Governing Council of the institution which held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) building in Abuja August 12, a development which insiders had earlier foreseen following the frosty relationship that existed between the VC and Babalakin.

While seven members of the Senate had voted for the removal of Ogundipe four had voted against, with one member absenting at the meeting presided over by the Pro-Chancellor.

In fact, another major fallout of the unsavoury relationship between the two, was the last-minute suspension of this year’s graduation ceremonies of the school.

Born in 1958, Professor Ogunsola is professor of medical microbiology, who specializes in disease control, particularly HIV/AIDS.

Before now, she had been immediate past provost of College of Medicine, the first woman to occupy the position.

According to Wikipedia citation, she showed signs of interest in her field early enough using dolls as patients, while offering medical care to them. She obtained her first degree from University of Ife, a master’s degree from College of Medicine, University of Lagos, before proceeding for her doctorate at University of Wales between in 1992

Her research areas centre on the regulation and management of viral diseases, particularly HIV, and she is the principal investigator at AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) at University of Lagos.

She has also been the chairman of Infection Control Committee of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and chairman of the National Association of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria.
