Woman 30, Hit By Police Presidential Outrider Breathes Her Last

A woman hit by a police presidential outrider has eventually breathed her last in hospital.

The woman, Mirriam Tembo who was aged 30, was hit by the motorbike bearing registration number ZP 3074, while she was crossing the road.

It was driven by a police presidential outrider and the incident happened near Selena Trust School in Chalala area of Zambia.

“Police recorded a fatal Road Traffic Accident in which a woman who was identified as Mirriam Tembo aged 30 of unknown house number in Garden Compound, Kanele area died after sustaining fatal injuries,” Police deputy spokesperson, Danny Mwale said in a statement.

He added that Tembo was rushed to the University Teaching Hospitals where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

According to MR Mwale, the rider of the motorbike identified as Constable Mungala aged 33 of State House Police camp survived with injuries and is admitted to the Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

“The motorbike is extensively damaged,” a report in the Zambian Observer quotes him as saying

Checks by The Eagle shows the police authorities in the country raising concerns over recent increase in road related accidents.

In the Muchinga Province for example, the police also last August expressed concerns over the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the region.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkhondya was cited in the local media as saying that Nakonde, Chinsali and Isoka districts had recently reported a higher number of fatal road accidents.

She particularly mentioned road accidents involving motorcycle riders, while speaking in an interview,

overspeading as major cause of the accidents.

The latest incident involving the Police Presidential Outrider seems to confirm the growing fears.

According to her, the introduction of unregistered motorcycles in Chinsali district and refusal by riders to wear crash helmets contribute to the accidents.

“In most cases, our pedestrians and cyclists are also to blame because they normally sit and cycle along the road, thereby causing a danger to themselves,” she said.
